Nestled in the vibrant heart of New York City’s Chinatown, The Original Buddha Bodai Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant 佛菩提 offers a uniquely satisfying culinary journey that masterfully blends authentic Chinese flavors with strict kosher and vegan dietary standards. This vegetarian haven invites diners to indulge in a wide spectrum of dishes that celebrate both tradition and innovation, all served in a warm, welcoming atmosphere that caters to all, including those with dietary restrictions.
The menu is a treasure trove of plant-based delights, prominently featuring beloved Cantonese dim sum alongside innovative vegan and kosher Chinese specialties. Begin your experience with expertly prepared appetizers like the Fried Spring Rolls, Shiitake Mushroom Duck, or the intriguing Vegetable Jellyfish made from taro – a playful texture that customers rave as “so bouncy” with perfectly balanced salty and fresh daikon-carrot slaw. Soup selections such as the Hot and Sour Soup and Triple Mushroom Spinach Soup offer a comforting embrace of complex flavors and soothing warmth.
If you’re seeking a main course that bursts with both taste and texture, dishes like the General TSO's Vegetarian Chicken and the House Special Cedar Fried Rice stand out as signature plates with deeply savory, aromatic profiles. The elusive cedar sauce, frequently praised by diners like Bradley C., provides an unforgettable fragrant and savory accent that enhances a variety of dishes, making every bite pop with umami richness. Furthermore, options like the Dim Sum Appetizer Platter and Singapore Style Rice Noodles offer a vibrant palette of flavors that highlight the kitchen’s skill at crafting authentic dimensional tastes entirely from plant-based ingredients.
Dinings here extends beyond food; it is an immersive cultural experience. The restaurant’s ambiance is cozy yet lively, perfect for casual family meals or intimate dinners. Genuine hospitality shines through each interaction, with staff ensuring a thoughtful dining experience that feels personal and attentive. As reviewer Tracy Marotta notes, the thoughtful provision of gender-neutral bathrooms, though not fully wheelchair-friendly, reflects the inclusive spirit of this establishment.
Patrons repeatedly highlight the freshness and creativity of the menu. Robie S., for example, was so enamored with the vegan sesame chicken that even a picky eater couldn’t resist asking to return. Meanwhile, Isabella Furrick appreciated the perfectly executed texture and bold flavors of dishes like the spicy chef’s special and the virtuosic "lamb" made wholly of plant-based ingredients. Even visitors from afar, like Darren Griggs from the UK, were touched by the warm welcome, complete with a complimentary pot of green tea ideally suited for cold weather, making their dining experience both memorable and comforting.

This is my favorite vegetarian Chinese restaurant. We ordered pan fried dumplings, tofu skin with cedar sauce, mixed sea food with cedar sauce in taro bowl, eggplant in spicy laksa sauce, Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles, and Fujian fried rice. Everything was so delicious. I love their cedar sauce. It goes so well with everything, and it’s so fragrant and savory. My favorite dish was the mixed seafood with cedar sauce in taro bowl. It has been my no. 1 for a long time. I have to get it whenever I’m here. I also love the Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles. The crunchy noodles with slightly gluey sauce were just perfect. Especially when the noodles were mixed with the sauce and got a bit saggy, it was the most delightful texture. The braised tofu skin with cedar sauce was also very good. I especially love the cabbage they put in the bottom of the plate. It absorbs the flavor and with the sweetness of its own. It was my first time trying their Fujian fried rice. The idea was very similar to the Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles, but replaced the noodles with fried rice. I love the bits of the ham in the sauce. Everything was simply delicious, but just like almost all Chinese food, it’s a bit greasy. Good thing was they had some tea to go with it. The servers were also pretty pleasant and friendly.
All vegan (unless otherwise marked) Chinese food in Chinatown with great service! My husband and I come here from Brooklyn at least monthly for dim sum because this place is amazing! November 2025 update : we continue to frequent this place! Delicious! There are two gender neutral bathrooms. One is larger with grab bars but not very wheelchair friendly. No step to enter.
For an appetizer, we got the jellyfish. It was so bouncy. The daikon and carrot slaw cut the saltiness nicely. For an entree, we got the chef’s special and asked for it very spicy. It did not disappoint!! We also got the lamb and mixed vegetables in garlic sauce. The lamb texture was on point, and the dish was very flavorful. Would absolutely recommend if you have dietary restrictions, they’re very accommodating!!
So good we ate here twice during our trip. I had their spring special “candied pineapple dish” which I couldn’t get enough of. We ordered several appetizers and my 10 year old -who is a very picky eater - loved her vegan sesame chicken so much she insisted we come back.
Wow what an absolutely delicious meal!! We had planned to visit this place when we looked at Chinatown from the UK before our visit and it did not disappoint. We were welcomed with a pot of complimentary Green Tea which was really appreciated given it was -5C outside. We ordered a Low Mein, Sweet & Sour ‘chicken’, the Buddah noodles and another noodle dish and all 4 were sublime. Good size portions, fresh vegetables, all delicious and with very different tastes. The service was attentive and friendly, we asked to tip and were told it was included - we managed to get them to rebill with a bigger tip as we were paying by card and they were so appreciative. 1 star deducted for atmosphere as walking through Chinatown there were so many intricately decorated places with lanterns etc - but really if you’re a veggie / vegan (or just like good food) this is the place to eat Go there and try it!
This place is the real deal. Great food. Great portion sizes. Always end up ordering too much, but always end up finishing everything because the food is great. Super clean restaurant. Cool staff. Dinner menu is awesome, but the Dim Sum menu is where it’s at. Shark fin dumplings, mushroom rice rolls, sticky rice lotus leaf are favorites of mine but you can’t go wrong with anything.
Mapo tofu rocks, Usually all chinese places give a liquid like water with tofu, but here it’s so savory, flavor filled, spicy and up for grabs! The cedar fried rice tastes awesome, usually has a motor oil/wok taste to it - but thats what I bought it for. Tasty chow fun, mild, flavor rich and yummy. Beef coriander soup was okish. Don’t get the dumplings, they seem fresh but just have a bland doughy taste.
